We had a nice big breakfast and explored the Greyfriars graveyard that stands behind the cafe where JK Rowling wrote a lot of Harry Potter. We tried to find the graves that inspired names like Hermione Granger, but we didn't. Here's a view from inside.
You can see this school from the cafe, and it's apparently the inspiration for Hogwarts (see the four corners?).
Another sad story for you: this is Greyfriars Bobby, a little dog who was a policeman's (bobby's) dog. When the bobby died, this little fellow kept vigil at his grave. People think you can rub his nose for good luck, but it's ruining the statue. There are books and movies about him, and they're on my list now.
With more time to kill, we found our way back to The Elephant House cafe, the supposed birthplace of HP. We had something called an affogato and affoGODo it was GOOD. It's espresso over icecream and it just about killed me. Cranachan is like a decadent granola bake with layers of raspberry jam. Mmmm. I was pretty much sick for the next 3 hours from all the sugar and caffeine.
View from inside the cafe:
Our train ride home was harrowing. The train was late, and the train in front of ours had had to stop because of a fire on the tracks. As we were riding, we were informed that another train had struck a person, and that we would be waiting until the death had been investigated, etc. The conductor sounded so sad. I can't say it wasn't on-theme for the trip, but it was upsetting. We made it home over an hour later than planned, and I ran home and face-planted for my very, very early trip tomorrow.
